Renewable electricity

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels turn energy from sunlight into electricity for your business.

As well as reducing carbon emissions and energy costs, solar PV panels can earn extra income for your organisation. The government’s Feed-in Tariff (FiT) scheme entitles you to:

• a set payment (based on the size of your system, among other factors) for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity your PV panels generate
• another 4.5p for each kWh you generate but don’t use yourself.

Renewable heat

Solar thermal panels use sunlight to heat water for your buildings. Air and ground source heat pumps can replace your electric or fossil fuel heating systems. Biomass boilers can replace your central heating.

All three technologies are eligible for the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive. This entitles you to a set payment for each unit of renewable heat your system generates. These payments will continue for up to 20 years.

Renewable Energy Centre

If you need or want to generate renewable energy on a larger scale, EDF Energy can design an Energy Centre for your site. With a complete Energy Centre, different renewable technologies can support each other to help your organisation become even more energy-efficient.

For instance, you could supply your site with both electricity and heat – while improving energy efficiency – using:

• a combined heat and power plant
• solar power integrated with ground source heat pumps

Our Sustainability Performance report outlines the progress we have made so far in delivering a low-carbon future. It reports publicly on our vision and Better Energy Ambitions, and serves as a summary of our performance. It also provides a high level summary of our vision for the future, following a comprehensive review of the issues facing our company and our industry (1).

The report is intended for all our key stakeholders: customers, employees, business partners, suppliers, public bodies, opinion formers, trade unions, and Non-Governmental Organisations. We have now aligned non-financial reporting with the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) International Financial Reporting Standards approach to consolidated reporting based on the level of ownership and control of a company. When reporting at the EDF Energy (UK) Limited level we have included 100% of the non-financial performance for each entity where we have control of more than 50% of the Board of Directors or Board level voting rights, and rights to more than 50% of the economic benefits (e.g. profit) flowing from it. A proportional consolidation approach is applied where we share control of an entity with a third party (e.g. EDF Energy Renewable joint ventures). Performance reported for previous years has not been altered.

Every year we must publish details of the fuel sources we use to generate our customers’ electricity. Our customers’ electricity is sourced from our own UK power stations, the wholesale energy market and other independent power generators. We are a major supporter of independent renewable generators.
